Never ignore a leak in your plumbing system, or deal with the problem with temporary fixes like putting a bucket under it. If you don’t take care of the leak, it can develop into a much bigger problem – such as causing mold growth, damage to your home’s foundation, or high water bills. Don’t risk these serious problems. Call Atlanta Plumbing Experts to stop leaks in their tracks.

What Causes Leaks in Plumbing?
There are two main causes of a plumbing leak. The first is problems with the connections. The connections might have come loose due to external pressure or because of a faulty installation. If this is the case, the leaky water will be clear.

If you see discolored water coming from the leak, then the problem is likely because of corrosion in your plumbing system. Old iron pipes are particularly prone to corrosion, as are the cheap Polybutylene pipes. Copper pipes generally develop pinhole leaks after 25 to 50 years of life.

What to Do for a Leaky Pipe
If you have a leak in your plumbing system, the first thing to do is contain the water. For small leaks in exposed pipes, you can put a bucket under the spot until the plumber comes. That way, you can continue to use your water. If you notice a wet spot on your ceiling, floor, or walls though, you will need to shut off the main water valve to stop water flow. Once the water main is off, you can turn on your cold water taps (not the hot water!) to drain the remaining water from the pipes. This will prevent further damage to your home until the leak is fixed by a professional plumber.

The first thing our Atlanta Plumbing Experts will do is locate the source of the leak. We use waterproof snake video cameras to look inside your plumbing system and find the leak as well as any other potential problems. In extreme cases of pipe corrosion, we might recommend repipe services. In most cases though, the leak (even ones from corrosion) can be fixed quickly, such as by applying a coating inside the pipes to fill holes and cracks.
